This Family Learning Guide can be a powerful tool for helping your children with the foundations of the core curriculum in mathematics, reading, and writing for Kindergarten through Grade 5. The Guide is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills or TEKS (pronounced like “Tex”) which are the standards for learning established by the State of Texas. The TEKS are a set of rigorous learning expectations for children at each grade and area of study from Kindergarten through Grade 12.

This Guide features activities, tips, and resources you can use at home to help your children learn. Questions that encourage children to think and communicate accompany the activities. Be sure to read and use the Important Questions on the back of the Guide often. Frequent use of these questions will let your children know you are concerned about their learning and will aid in increasing their reasoning and reflection.

The Family Learning Guide is one component of the TEKS For Austin project. The project also includes a series of videotapes which will be broadcast on our AISD channel and will be available for checkout through our school libraries. In addition, we will publish through the Austin-American Statesman special newspaper focus sections about teaching and learning in Austin ISD.
