Part 6: Dropout Recovery Basics - Coding Leavers & Dropouts

Who Is Considered A Leaver?

  • Any student in grade 7-12 that is reported through PEIMS in one school year but does not return the following school year must be reported as a leaver.
  • The leaver list is available throughout the year, so it is imperative that schools continue to monitor it for changes in student enrollment.
  • Leavers are attributed to the last campus they attended except in the case of the ALC, VSP and JJAEP. Leavers from those campuses are attributed to their home (residential) campuses.

Who Is Considered A Dropout?

  • Students not recovered and/or attending school by the last Friday of September are dropouts.
  • Students previously enrolled but fail to start school during the school start window (no-shows).
  • Student's withdrawn due to poor attendance- and not attending a school during the school start window.

School start window - high school only:

  • Please note: It is imperative that we focus on dropout recovery/leavers during the school start window because we can ensure that students enroll in school and are coded correctly.
  • Dropout recovery efforts continue until the PEIMS submission deadline in December.
  • Codes can be changed until PEIMS snapshot in December if it turns out that a student was enrolled within the school start window.

Middle & High School Academically Acceptable Ratings:

  • High school dropout rates need to be less than 2.0% for Austin ISD's 4-year completion rates to approach acceptable levels in the coming years of the federal ratings system.
  • Middle school annual dropout rates must be less than 1.0% to earn an Academically Acceptable rating. Also, please bear in mind that as soon as there are 5 students in a cell, that cell will be used at middle schools to determine ratings.
  • Complete and accurate documentation must substantiate all of your leaver codes.
