Reading Recovery ®

Reading Recovery is:

  • An early intervention for first grade students having the most difficulty reading and writing
  • An acceleration program designed to help the student catch up before he/she falls into a pattern of failure
  • An intensive professional development program that sharpens teachers' observation and intervention skills by providing year-long training, coaching, monitoring, and support
  • A program developed in New Zealand by Dr. Marie Clay and implemented in AISD in 1993

Descubriendo La Lectura (DLL) is:

  • A reconstruction of Reading Recovery for first-time first grade students whose initial literacy instruction is delivered in Spanish and who are at risk of failing to learn to read
  • An acceleration program to enable Spanish-speaking students to read and write within the average band of bilingual first grade classrooms
  • An intensive professional development program for teachers to provide the most effective support of literacy learning in Spanish

1999-2000 AISD Program Description

  • 115 Reading Recovery/DLL Teachers
  • 71 elementary schools have Reading Recovery/DLL Programs
  • Over 1200 students will be served by Reading Recovery/DLL Programs in 1999-2000
