HIGH SCHOOL SEMESTER EXAMINATIONS

All District students enrolled in high school courses, with the exceptions set out below, shall be required to take semester examinations and/or complete culminating activities in all courses.

EXCEPTIONS

The exceptions shall be as follows:

  1. Final semester seniors who meet eligibility criteria shall not be required to take any course final examinations.
  1. If they meet eligibility criteria, students in grades 11 and 12, who are not final semester seniors, and students in grade 10, who have earned ten or more credits and are enrolled in junior level or higher courses, may be exempted from all except two final examinations per semester in core academic courses.

For purposes of this policy, core academic courses shall include courses in English, mathematics, social studies, science, foreign language, and fine arts.

  1. Students enrolled in AP or IB courses with an average of 80 or above with two or fewer absences at the end of the fifth six-weeks grading period and at the time the final examination is scheduled, who take the AP or IB examinations, and who otherwise meet eligibility criteria, shall not be required to take the course final examination. Students enrolled in AP or IB courses with an average of 85 or above with three or fewer absences at the end of the fifth six-weeks grading period and at the time the final examination is scheduled, who take AP & IB examinations, shall not be required to take the course final examination.

AP or IB examinations in core academic courses may be used to meet the requirement for two final examinations in core academic courses as set out in item 2 above.

Students who are enrolled in one-semester AP or IB courses in the fall who have an average of 80 or above with two or fewer absences at the end of the second six-weeks grading period and at the time of the scheduled course final examination, who plan to take the AP or IB examination, and who otherwise meet eligibility criteria, shall not be required to take the fall course final examination. Students who are enrolled in one-semester AP or IB courses in the fall who have an average of 85 or above with three or fewer absences at the end of the second six-weeks grading period and at the time of the scheduled course final examination, who plan to take the AP or IB examination, shall not be required to take the fall course final examination.

However, if a student fails to take the AP or IB examination for the one-semester AP or IB course, the grade shall be recorded as "I" or incomplete until the local course final examination has been taken.

Each campus shall be responsible for ensuring that only students who are enrolled in an AP or IB course and who take the AP or IB examination will be exempted from the final examination for that course. Written examinations and/or culminating activities shall be given in all other subject areas.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

In order to be eligible for an exemption from a final examination, a student, other than students enrolled in an AP or IB course, shall be required to have an average of 90 or above with two or fewer absences or an average of 95 or above with three or fewer absences.

Students, inclusive of students enrolled in an AP or IB course, who receive excused absences for religious holy days and for documented partial day health care appointments and who make up their academic work in the time allotted shall receive any benefit based on attendance under this policy. [See FDD(LEGAL) and (LOCAL)]

Students who meet the exemption criteria may elect to take a final examination in order to improve their course grade average.

GRADE DETERMINATION

The semester examination for a course shall be weighted equally with the grade for each grading period in determining the semester grade for the course. Course averages for students who are exempted from the final examination shall be based on an average of the grades for each grading period.

MIDDLE OR JUNIOR HIGH SEMESTER EXAMINATIONS

Semester examinations shall be given to students in middle or junior high school who are taking courses for high school credit. The semester examination grade shall be weighted equally with the grade for each grading period in determining the semester course grade.

STUDENTS IN SPECIAL EDUCATION

Each student in special education shall be required to take final examinations for regular course credit unless the student qualifies for an exemption or the student's Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee has recommended an alternative method by which the student will complete the course requirements. [See EHBAB(LEGAL)]
