Enrolling in AISD

The Austin School District will have counselors, student service specialists and other personnel at the Austin Convention Center from Tuesday through Friday, September 6-9, to continue enrolling the school-age evacuees of Hurricane Katrina.

Buses will begin picking up these students at the Austin Convention Center on Thursday morning, September 8, to transport them to their new Austin schools.

School District personnel have been stationed at the Convention Center since it opened early Saturday morning to hurricane refugees, assisting with health care and other necessary provisions, and preparing to enroll students.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, September 6-7, District personnel will meet with students and parents at the Convention Center to make actual school assignments.

At 9:15 a.m. on Thursday, September 8, buses will depart the Convention Center with students, parents and AISD Parent Support Specialists aboard, to visit their new schools. After a brief tour of the school, meeting their new teachers and classroom, and receiving lunch, the students and their parents will return to the Convention Center at approximately 1 pm. The same schedule will be followed on Friday, September 9.

On Monday, September 12, students now living at the Convention Center will begin a full-day of classes at their new Austin schools.

Officials also announced that, as of Friday, September 2, approximately 55 evacuee students had already enrolled in Austin schools. These evacuees are staying with family or friends, or are living in motels or other accommodations, and enrolled in the neighborhood school where they are staying.
